Vista 64 support still missing in action for Canon’s RAW Codec

November 3, 2007

Being a proud owner of a Canon EOS 5D one of the first things I did after getting a new 64bit Vista machine was to go get the imaging codec from Canon for their digital SLR’s.

My enthusiasm was quickly destroyed when I found out that it was 32bit only. Fast forward a few months and Canon have just released a new version of the Codec that adds support for the likes of the 1D Mark III. But still no Vista 64 support. Come on Canon, sort this out. You’ve gone to the effort to write the codec, spend a little bit more effort to create a 64bit version. As our favourite pub land-lord would say: Shame on you Canon, Shame on you.

Here’s hoping you fix this for the next version.

Oh, and its not just Canon that doesn’t know Vista 64 bit exists, Nikon are just as bad.

Another version (Canon RAW Codec 1.2) has been released on Nov. 12th. Still no 64-bit Vista support. =(

  2. Roger Webster Says:

They released a new version yesterday (January 8, 2008), and guess what: no x64 support.

For crying out loud, Canon, this is *totally* unacceptable.

I have Vista 64 bit. I also have Photoshop CS3. I installed the “Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB932988)” which interestingly addresses RAW on 64 bit systems when there is supposedly no support for RAW on Vista 64. That said, after installing the Microsoft update, I saw the new RC120UPD_7L.exe RAW codec (canon RAW codec for EOS camera) for Vista (I went into the EOS camera software downloads) and installed it successfully (There were not any errors)!!!! For the skeptics, It says 32 bit under the procman. However, in Windows explorer, sure enough, RAW is showing up. Indeed, I am not wrong. My System type states 64 bit operating system….and I am a techy in avocation and vocation. The biggest issue in installs between 32 bit and 64 bit is often in the installer. Perhaps with this build they updated the installer. Anyway, it works!!!! Try it and let me know if you get the same results.

I totally agree with Ken and Roger… Canon’s main business with DSLRs is with professional photogs who are more likely than traditional consumers to be running Vista x64.

It’s not like the 64-bit version is some secret, and the future can only be 64-bit… so why not address that issue now (or preferably months ago)?

Maybe Nikon would appreciate our business more [gasp!]

  5. still no support… Shame on Canon

  6. Bryn Says:

  7. Oxidiser Says:

I just mailed to canon support asking why it isn’t available yet.

Will post again when/if I get the reply.

  8. Oxidiser Says:

This is the response of a mail to technical support I mailed yesterday:

Currently, Canon has decided to support only the Microsoft 32 bit
editions of Windows. We sincerely apologize for any frustration you
have experienced if you use a 64 bit edition.

Guess we’ll have to wait untill they decide to support 64-bit. When will that be? When microsoft drops the 32-bit version of its OS?

  9. David Blake Says:

We are working on a 64 bit codec for CR2 on Vista.

If you are interested in trying out the beta version, the page is http://www.ardfry.com/cr2-codec/
